Real-world evidence leads to increased product value in competitive market

This case study highlights how Baker Tilly helped a life sciences company understand the product value compared to its competition

Client background

Baker Tilly was contacted by a large, multi-national circulatory support device company with over 200 patents and 500 clinical publications, and products featured in nearly 10 clinical guidelines. Senior leaders engaged Baker Tilly to perform a refresh of a landmark study using real-world data (RWD) and subsequently develop and implement a strategic publication plan. The plan demonstrates the economic and clinical outcomes associated with their hero product in comparison to a close competitor product.

The business challenge

The client wanted to replicate a landmark study, published more than five years prior, using the most recent RWD available. Additionally, confirmation was needed that the previously established favorable clinical and economic outcomes associated with their product still held true in comparison to a competitor's products.

The Baker Tilly approach

Baker Tilly utilized RWD to assess the economic and clinical outcomes associated with the use of the client’s product in comparison to treatment with a competitor’s product. Real-world evidence (RWE) was generated to confirm that the client’s product continues to produce better outcomes, lower costs and better survival benefit compared to alternative treatment options. A scientific manuscript outlining the continued cost and clinical benefits of the client product in the most recent data was developed. Baker Tilly crafted a comprehensive publication strategy, targeting key audiences of high-impact journals.

Business impact

The refreshed analysis enabled the client to have an updated understanding of the impact of various treatment strategies on patient outcomes. Through the insights generated from Baker Tilly’s analyses, the client was able to convey the product value and cost-effectiveness of its product to clinicians and providers. Additionally, a high-impact, peer-reviewed journal accepted and published the manuscript outlining the cost savings of the client's product in comparison to an alternative competitor product. These study results were used to help healthcare providers and physicians understand the product value compared to the competition.
